A high level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) can indicate various conditions affecting the prostate gland. PSA is a protein produced by both normal and cancerous prostate cells. While elevated PSA levels are often associated with prostate cancer, they can also result from non-cancerous conditions such as prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). A high PSA level doesn’t necessarily mean cancer is present, but it warrants further investigation, typically through additional tests like a digital rectal exam (DRE) and possibly a prostate biopsy, to determine the underlying cause. Early detection and proper management are crucial in addressing potential prostate health concerns.
