Parotid gland calculi
Parotid gland calculi, also known as salivary gland stones or sialolithiasis, are small, mineralized deposits that can form within the parotid gland, which is one of the major salivary glands located near the ears.
Parotid gland calculi
These calculi typically develop when minerals like calcium or magnesium accumulate and crystallize within the salivary ducts, causing a blockage that obstructs the normal flow of saliva. As a result, affected individuals may experience pain, swelling, and tenderness in the vicinity of the parotid gland, particularly while eating or when the gland attempts to release saliva. In some cases, the presence of calculi can also lead to infections or inflammation. Diagnosis of parotid gland calculi often involves physical examination, imaging studies like ultrasound, or sialography, a specialized X-ray procedure.
